Vikram “Vik” Uppal is the founder of Aid India, a charitable organization that provides families in the Asian country with basic necessities like food and housing. India has a population of 1.2 billion people, and surveys indicate that 300 million of these citizens live below the country’s official poverty line. Last month, the Indian government announced its intention to raise the value of the economy to $10 trillion over the course of 16 years in an effort to eradicate poverty.
To do this, the government would invest in infrastructure projects, including railways, highways, and power grid expansion to rural villages. It would also dedicate resources to the construction of training institutes for its 490 million-strong workforce. These institutes would teach job skills related to the manufacturing industry, a sector which the country aims to build up through an economic plan to make more products domestically.
The government also intends to update its farming sector, invest in sustainable energy, and repeal old laws that prevent modern business from being conducted easily between multiple parties. While the project is ambitious, the successful execution of this plan would provide many people with opportunities to raise themselves out of poverty, including the poor in rural areas.
